Let’s Talk About Chocolate!

Since 1978, Famous 4th Street Cookies has been making our famous Chocolate Chip Cookies with Hershey’s Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips.  Have you tried them?  They are amazing!

Milton S. Hershey founded the Lancaster Caramel Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the 1880s. He attended the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, and saw a German-made chocolate-processing machinery.  Hershey then decided to go into the chocolate business. In 1900 he sold the Lancaster Caramel Company and began the manufacture milk chocolate bars. In 1903, Milton Hershey began work on a new factory in Derry Township, Pennsylvania. It then became the world’s largest chocolate-manufacturing plant.

According to Hershey’s website, Hershey’s SemiSweet Chocolate Chips are 40% cocoa?  The sugar used in making these chocolate chips is usually a combination of beet and cane sugar.  Famous 4th Street Cookie uses Hersehy’s SemiSweet Chocolate Chips because they are delicious and clean label (no artificial flavor or ingredients). Our Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies are also clean label with ingredients that you would find in your own kitchen.

Cocoa “beans” are seeds from the fruit of the cacao tree.  These trees grow primarily near the Equator in tropical areas. The seeds grow inside a pod and are covered with white pulp.  These seeds are used to make Chocolate Liquor:  Cocoa beans are shelled and then fermented, roasted and ground until they liquefy.  Cocoa butter and cocoa solids make up this liquid; both naturally present in the bean.  Cocoa Butter is a natural fat from the cocoa bean.  Chocolate is made when chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sugar, lecithin, (An emulsifier) and vanilla are mixed together.  Manufacturers then add milk, fruit, and nuts according to their own recipes.  Semisweet Chocolate: is required in the US to contain at least 35% chocolate liquor. Most semisweet chocolate contains 35 to 45 percent chocolate liquor. Semisweet chocolate is often referred to as dark chocolate.  There is no specific amount of sugar required for chocolate known as semi-sweet. However, semisweet usually refers to chocolate with no more than 50% sugar

Meet Terry Pannebaker and try his Blueberry Muffin Cookie

Meet Terry Pannebaker

To celebrate the start of a new Spring season, local Famous 4th Street Cookie fans can meet the creator of the Blueberry Muffin Cookie – Terry Pannebaker! The new cookie flavor, available March 21, 2022 was adapted from the winning recipe of the Famous Cookie Baking Competition held in October of 2021. Pannebaker will visit the Reading Terminal Market on March 21 to hand out free Blueberry Muffin cookies to Famous customers from 12pm to 2pm to celebrate the first day of the first day of spring. For the rest of the day, all Blueberry Muffin Cookies will be $1

Blueberry Muffin Cookie

The Blueberry Muffin cookie is made with dried blueberries, Belgian white chocolate chips, and a hint of lemon. Amateur baker and grand prize winner of the Famous Cookie Baking Competition, Terry Pannebaker, designed the recipe after a conversation with his wife as they sought out a “crumble-free” way to enjoy blueberry muffins.

Famous Cookie Baking Competition

The Famous Cookie Baking Competition was held during October 2021 in honor of National Cookie Month. Following an initial call for entries, a total of 18 original cookie recipes were submitted – eight of which were selected to advance to the semi-final tasting round. Of those eight, three Famous finalists were selected by a panel of judges and a group of Philadelphia Tastemakers to participate in a live bake-off at Reading Terminal Market where Pannebaker’s Blueberry Muffin Cookie took the crown.

As the grand prize winner, Pannebaker also received a $500 gift card from Reading Terminal Market, Reading Terminal Market and Famous 4th Street Cookie Company apparel, and a Reading Terminal Market gift basket.

We are so excited for all of our customers to try this creative, delicious treat and to meet Terry Pannebaker. Join the fun, eat cookies, and celebrate spring!
